afternoon. not bad. current temperatures around the region, 35 degrees in the district. this is a trend that we like. this is the -- what is today? wednesday. the third day of the week and the third day of higher temperatures than the day before so that is good. here is your day planner for today. early clouds, a flurry or two. partial sunshine later on and, in fact, perhaps movely sunny skies later on today. highs around -- mostly sunny skies later on today. highs around 40 degrees. >> 40 will be nice compared to what we've had with the wind and low temperatures. >> not sure what that feels like anymore. let's check in with lauren demarco for us. >> so far, so good today in the way of accidents. we don't have anything reported out there on the roads. just seeing a little bit of volume in our usual stretches as folks head in to work. 66 eastbound starting to slow out of manassas with the heavy volume as everybody heads in. but heading past route 50 fair oaks, things look pretty good.

very nice trip. from nut hi -- from nutley street into the beltway, you are looking good as well. nice trip in maryland crossing the american legion bridge. no problems on the inner or outer loop. beltway looks great from bethesda up to college park. 95 and the bw parkway both running incident-free as is route 50 the john hanson highway. 95 in virginia, northbound, you will find a little bit of volume as you head up from newington and spring field. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. as we check our top stories, president obama signs the repeal of don't ask, don't tell. the president will sign the landmark law in just over three hours repealing the pentagon's ban will let homosexuals seven openly in the military for the first time. when the president signs it today, he will be making good on a campaign pledge. he has called to a basic human right. tough financial times ahead for many local school tricycles including prince george's

county. the superintendent there says 1,000 teacher layoffs are a possibility. superintendent dr. william height says that what is it would take to close an $89 million budget gaffe after other proposed cuts, including other staff layoffs, a pay freeze and eliminating middle school sports. he says he will ask the state and county for more money to try on avoid layoffs. we'll get a better look at the future of education as mayor vince gray is set to name five nominees to education positions. kaya henderson has been serving as interim chancellor since october. a follow-up to the new search procedures on metro which are meant to deter terrorist attacks. random bag checks took place at the college park station in maryland and at the braddock road station in virginia. tsa screeners kept an eye on anyone with luggage, backpacks, briefcases or bags. they stopped every eighth person and did a swab test to detect trace amounts of

explosives. the whole process took under a minute. metro says this idea has been minister work for many years. the death a man outside the dr-9 nightclub in october has been ruled a homicide. but the coroner's report does not indicate he was fatally beaten as initially thought. it also indicated at that time victim may have hay preexisting heart condition. his friends hope the latest report will get the charges reinstated against the five nightclub employees who were recently cleared in the case. >> my reaction was relief in that the vindication of what we've been saying all along. >> the alcoholic beverage regulation administering is allowing the club to remain open for now. one tease neighborhood comes together if -- for a

grosser w ho -- for a grocer who was killed in his store. raj patel was shut and killed by at least two gunman during a robbery attempt on saturday night. >> this is what brooklyn is about. i mean you touch one of us and it affects all of us and we are not going to let this go. >> it says a lot about our community. we are not total strangers. >> police released pictures from the store's surveillance cameras showing the the two suspects. if anybody has any information this case, they are asked to call d.c. police. there is a $25,000 reward. police in maryland on the lookout for two men who shot and killed a 19-year-old near kennedy high school. this happened about 1:30 cled afternoon on hutchinson lane in silver spring. the school was placed on code blue as a precaution. -- this happened about 1:30 yesterday afternoon on hutchinson lane in silver spring. the senate gets ready to

its tables are now turned on wikileaks founder julian assange. he says he has been the victim of a leak himself. a british newspaper published details of a swedish police report on the two women accusing assange of rape. assange questioned the timing of the newspaper report saying it was clearly designed to undermine his bail status. he is currently free on bail as he fights extradition to sweden on the sex crime allegations. on capitol hill, the senate is expected to hold a test vote on giving health care to 9-11 first responders. it would give medical benefits to people who got sick after

breathing toxic chemicals while working at ground zero. senate democrats say they have the 60 votes to overcome opposition by republicans. senators barbara boxer and dianne feinstein are calling on the epa to establish a standard for the levels of chromium 6 in drinking water. epa currently tests for total chromium levels but the tests don't show precise amounts of chromium 6 which tests have shown can cause gastrointestinal problems and even cancer. officials will did a final assessment next year and will then decide whether new standards need to be set. the 2010 census crpt is out and we'll tell you how it may affect the 2012 election. flooding and mudslides in the western part of the country have promed a few states of

they are having trouble out west with the heavy rain and it it just continues to causes big problems. this is mesquite, nevada under a state of emergency because of flooding. across the border in northwest arizona, the situation so bad that four homes were washed away. more houses were expected to be lost overnight. while in california, governor arnold schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in six counties because of flooding and mudslides. in two foothill suburbs of los angeles, more than 200 home have been ordered evacuated. forecasters there expect more rain today. >> they just cannot catch a break out there. we're lucky. we are catching breaks out here i think. >> we are. it has been cold. it has been a colder than average december, for example, but we're in the getting that kind of weather and yes, they do expect more rain. it is the but they don't get this much all at

once. it is just nonstop for right now. that is a problem. let me show you the weather head heinz for us for today and the next few days. and these headlines are changing every day as we tweak the forecast. first of all, as you know, it is officially winter. today will be the first full day of winter. in honor of that, we have a few flurries around this morning. in manassas, you are see something flurries. late-week storm is slowing down. originally, we were talking about christmas eve into christmas. then we dropped that. we said christmas afternoon, christmas night. now we are saying sunday and if it keeps slowing down, it will be february before it gets here t could snow on sunday. we'll show that to you and keep watching it as it develops. current temperatures around the region, 35 in washington. baltimore is at 33. dulles at 33. winchester, 34 degrees. it is cold but these temperatures are warmer than what we had yesterday morning

and remember yesterday morning, it was warmer than what we had monday morning. so a good little trend going on here. satellite-radar composite. we have plenty of clouds this morning. this radar is overplaying it. we are not seeing snow across the region this morning but we do have some flurries here and there as i mentioned in some locations. gaithersburg, out in cumberland, maryland, manassas, virginia. alexandria, you are seeing some flurry activity and a couple of spots off to the east. that is about it. this is really overdoing it. good amount of cloud cover for the mid-atlantic but later on today, we'll see some sunshine moving in here. so the forecast for today looks like this. partly sunny skies, early flurries are possible. indeed, they are out there already. believe it or not, yesterday, we got to 41 degrees. i think we'll get to 41 today. clear skies, a little bit agreesy and low 20s and teens

during the overnight hours tonight. breezy tomorrow. saturday, christmas day, 35 degrees. right now, we think it is dry. sunday, we cloud autopsy and a chance of snow. right-- sunday, we cloud up and a chance of snow. right now, i can tell you a chance of snow. don't know exactly where it will be. let's get an update on traffic. for that, we go to lauren demarco. >> as you travel 95 in virginia headed northbound, effect off and on the brake making the trip through woodbridge and up through newington to the beltway. your trip inbound getting through manassas. you will find volume delays. here we are leaving 50 fair oaks. ebb running at speed but you do seat volume building. things are looking good from nutley street in toward the beltway. in montgomery county, 270, we did have reports of delays leaving frederick. here we are at 118 in germantown for a nice trip. but your headlights heading toward you as inbound traffic heading in toward the split.

no major problems in your direction. on the beltway, we had some reports of police activity near georgia avenue but it is off on the shoulder. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. the 2010 census report is out and it shows the country is still growing. but just not quite as fast as it has if years past. the population now stands at 308,745, 538 people. that is up a little more than 9% from 2000. the sent us also shows fewer people are living in the northeast and midwest and more are living in the south and west. the sent us will affect the 2012 presidential election and the make-up of congress. eight states will gain seats. texas is the big winner here. it will add four house seats. ten states will lose seats. new york and ohio will each lose two. the changes won't affect any congressional seats from our area but the census shows our region is growing. d.c.'s population jumped by more than 5% and stands at more

street continuing a four-day streak and an american video game developer taking one. its rivals to work. let's check in with robert gay with our fox business beat this morning. good morning. >> good morning. >> a couple days we've been rallying on wall street. what led to yesterday appear rally and what are we looking at today. >> we continue to see m & a activity on these canadian banks. this were a lot healthier during the crisis. td bank buying chrysler financial. dsm from holland buying m martech biosciences. if you buy baby formula, and you have dha in there, that is made by martech. apple talking about selling a million apple tv units. also adobe jumping up on its fourth quarter profit report and it is forecast as well.

>> mentioned the video game. activision is in the news. what are they doing. >> not only did they say the latest call of duty, that series which has been wildly popular, it sold a billion copies worldwide. it is one of the best sellers ever. they are all suing a couple of -- they are suing the company now, electronic arts because of guys that are behind that series, they didn't work on black often ps but the prior ones and they left earlier for tampering with them. -- they didn't work on black ops. the two executives had sued the company for $36 million in royalties they said they were owed and they were fired instead of getting paid that. so you are seeing some moves here behind the scenes here. it will be interesting to see how this settles out because this is when you see the guys

so we have a bit of good news for travelers. both runways at heathrow airport have now opened. but there is still a huge backlog of flights following a major snowstorm that ground the or delayed thousands of flights going through europe. it has had a rippling effect at airports in the united states as well. can you take a look at the video there, what they're dealing w a gaithersburg, maryland man is also trying to rebook at dulles international so he can get to india. >> my father-in-law, he is having a surgery there. he has just been diagnosed with cancer. i really have to get there. >> service at heathrow may not be fully restored until tomorrow. my gosh, those poor people. >> that snow video. >> and people who say they've been in the same clothes for three days, four days, can't get their luggage. >> amazing. >> we are getting off fairly easy at least today. >> we really are and for the

beltway on i-95. northbound, delays off and on from woodbridge and from newington up through springfield. 395 slowing as you head from duke street. that is the main lanes there of northbound 95 headed up to seminary road. hov lanes running pretty we had at the center of your screen. no problems on the beltway in virginia. beltway in maryland, we do have some of that usual volume delay as you head from college park around past silver spring. the pace pick up as you head towards connecticut avenue. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. checking our top stories, the governor of virginia against banning gays from serving in the virginia national guard. governor bob mcdonnell says he is opposed to a plan to ban gays in the coast guard. >> the president will hold a

signing ceremony this morning at 9:15. we'll have live coverage of that on air and onloon. with don't ask, don't tell behind them, there is still a lot of action in the final of t congress. >> there is a flurry of last- minute laws being worked on right now. it is still not clear what will get passed before christmas. fox 5's audrey barnes breaks down the ask on the hill. rotor the senate overwhelmingly passed the continuing resolution to fund the government until march. the house now takes up the measure on the start treaty. >> without it, we are, in fact, less safe. >> reporter: senate democrats moved closer to passing that too, picking up what they believe are enough gop supporters for a 2/3 majority. >> i believe the treaty and the nuclear modernization plan make our country safer and more secure. >> reporter: some republicans are sticking to their opposition. >> i think this is a monumental mistake. >> reporter: the nuclear arms agreement cuts the number of deployed nuclear weapons for the u.s. and rush y from 2200 to 1550.

tucker. >> i want to be christmasy today. >> you are. >> after he got some big movies that you are talking about j we have a horrible movie. they have a great movie this week and a so-so movie this week. >> i want to go with the bad first. get it out of the way. >> well, little fockers, awful. i can't even begin to describe how bad this film is. this is a waste of time, a waste of talent. i'm a huge fan of meet the parents. i thought meet the fockers was okay. every single joke was forced. what made the original so funny was it was natural, it was awkward, it flowedded. >> you felt so bad for him along the way. we all know what you are going through. this time, they should have felt bad for me for sitting in the theater. it was and person that i -- i wanted to walk out three times. the first 10 minutes, there is not a single joke. only funny line in the entire popovy is said by somebody off

miller's crossing. this is the cohen brothers at their best. they've done others but i love this old-style classic western they are doing here. it is a remake kind of of the 1969 version. highliy highliy-- haley steinfeld plays the main role here and it is her first acting job. jeff brims is a great actor. true grit is action-packed. it is funny at time. the drama is great. but this girl, it is her first movie she has ever been in.

and she is like 13 or 14 years old. can you imagine getting your first part with these guys. she holds the whole movie together. and see i go young girl hollywood a male-driven film together is beyond amazing. >> we have one minute left. wanted to talk about casino jacks. i have abeen looking forward to this one. >> this is about the super lobbyist, jack abramoff. it felt like a moore man's american beauty way political twist to it. -- a poor man's american beauty with a political twist to it. this is a story that just happened a couple of years ago. i didn't understand if the director wanted me to feel sympathy for him or not. it is pretty bad what this guy did. you get some decent performances. i gave to a two and a half out of five. i thought it was a decent film.

tommy in manassas. he asks what caused chapped lips and why do only some family members suffer from it when everyone is exposed to the same weather and home conditions. >> that is i great -- that is a great question. >> it is a great question. i will answer the first question. we are all different. even though you are experiencing the same conditions, you may have different levels of moisture in your lips than someone else in your family. it just sounds funny. we are all different. >> we all know what you're talking about too. >> he just came up with that. >> but we do have some real answers here. >> if tommy would stop licking his lips, he probably wouldn't have the same issue as his sister. is that part it was. >> you can't lick your lips because it dries them out. >> that is the thing. when your lips are dry, you tend to lick them because --'

right. you tend to lick them and it does make it worse, seriously. >> why? why does it make it worse? ? >> chapped lips can occur when your lips are too dry. this can be the result of certain nutritional deficiencies but more often in the summertime, bright sunshine, hot temperatures and dry conditions. frequently when he with don't have a lot of humidity and you are licking your lips and in the wintertime, it is dry air which we have here a lot and wind in particular. it just -- there is a thin membrane on your lips that, when you lick them, it can kind of take that membrane away and it makes -- >> you have die yftive enzymes in your saliva that break down -- >> there you go. >> you have digestive enzymes in your

lauren demarco. >> i do want to mention i saw in cvs, tony, if you are looking for presents, they have little bags of coal. >> stu. steve will enjoy that. >> i'm going to regift to lauren. >> i didn't say anything. we have several accidents actually popping up route now on the road. sky fox live over the scene southbound 95 in virginia. we had a wreck right here south of springfield. it looks like everything has moved over to the shoulder. that is good news but anticipate delays as you leave the beltway heading south on 95 as we get past backlick road. also dealing with accidents in maryland on 270 southbound just before 124. we've got a wreck, two left lanes reportedly blocked there. look at this delay. here we are at 118 germantown and the delay beginning before this. so very slow southbound 270 to get past the wreck before montgomery village avenue. also have an accident reported bw parkway at route 50 and southbound route 5 branch avenue at the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. over to you. >> thank you. flying is costing us more

and more these days as men. you know. airlines are charging for everything from soda to blankets to headphones and apparently no relief in sight for air travelers. new numbers released by the federal government show that baggage fees have skyrocketed now, to $30 a bag in some cases. we collect qifly played $464lio 2007 -- collectively paid $464 million to check our bags in 2007. and this career, we've paid $2.5 billion. >> the numbers blew me away. it adds up but into millions and billions? yes. i think consumers who not want to participate in that kind money-making idea. >> the airlines still say they need more and more of your money. when you add up all those extra fees, airlines made $4.3 billion often the extra fees.

divine dance institute in capitol heights, maryland. and they are getting in early- morning practice for a show they have going on tonight. it's called tote for the holidays. it is providing that as well. because this dance company is going to put on a show where they will transport 69 residents from a local shelter to a school they have rented. when they get there, the residents will get clothes they have collected, a warm meal and then treated to this wonderful performance that's going to help them get into the spirit of the season. we'll find out more about the divine dance institute. it is more than a dance company, a place for kids to come and learn how to dance. they do a lot of community outreach and we'll find out about this this morning as their shirts say it all, i have hope. and hope for the holidays is what it is all about. >> thank you, holly. now to our facebook fan of the day.
